For me, the biggest uncertainty is about how they'll actually sound as its not possible to audition them beforehand. To some degree its a blindleep but the quality of the components used sort of helped ease my mind. I appreciate its possible to have great components and still stuff it up but it at least gives you something of a headstart.

The next biggest concern is matching components. For the same reasons above, its going to be a degree of trial and error.

Quite agree with what you are saying.

Felt a bit like that myself but I purchsed my drivers and components from uk stockists and they all said to me is this a Troels Gravesen design and then started to tell me what a brilliant man he is and how is designs are higly rated by anyone who knows anything about speaker design.

I then felt quite safe going ahead. Some of my concerns were soldering up the crossovers but after the first few joints I was quite happy apart from burning a capacitor which I had to replace due to a joint being close to it and not realising that I was touching it.

I chickened out of the crossover build and got Jantzen to send them fully assembled.

Out of interest, what amp are you using Coll?

My amp is a bit of a bone of contention at the moment. I have an Audiolab 8200 CDQ so use this as a pre amp. When I finished the speakers I was using a Crown XLI 1500 power amplifier which realy I liked but decided to build a MOSFET power amplifier using BK Electric modules. As soon as I switched I found the sound open but maybe a little bright. That when I fitted the switched resistors to the speakers.

Now this eliminates the top end brightness. But the trouble is it is definately a different sound from the Crown and I keep thinking should I change again.

Maybe a Abrahamsen or something else with a smooth sound.

Coll I want to build one of those Hypex amps, but could not find the thread with them on.

Actually the modules I used are from BK Electric the people who make sub woofers they are class A/B but are Mosfets not bi polar transistors. They have big heat sinks but run quite hot probably because the speakers are 4 ohms.

The Hypex are class D

BTW does the Abrahamsen 70watt per channel power amp sound as good as the integrated model and are they what you would describe as smooth sounding.

Ok just looked them up, better not hijack thread, how are you finding them? Could you mail me? Re the V4.0 power amp yes it's virtually identical very musical with bags of dynamics. The advantage of the V4.0 is you can bridge two 240W huge soundstage and controlled bass.

Not sure it's wise to bridge power amps for 4 Ohm speakers...

EDIT: I supposed you were suggesting this to Coll, but maybe it was a general remark. Anyway, bridging makes the amp see half the speaker's impedance, so only worth considering for speakers with a stable, highish impedance.
