40” is a an absolute maximum. Should perform well with everything from DVD, SD, full HD and even 4k (should I need it).

Our present, award winning, full HD, 32” Panasonic still has superb picture quality - despite it’s age - and so the new one will have to be pretty darned good or there will be no point.

I like to buy from John Lewis if at all possible and saving a couple of quid by going elsewhere doesn’t really interest me.

Don’t want anything with the word ‘ready’ in it’s description.

Thanks.

Have a look at Pannys as you like yours so much. Alternatively, LG produce some worthy contenders.

Perhaps pop into Richers to gauge which ones to shortlist.

Oddly enough, I too have narrowed it down to the Samsung 6400 and Pana 700b. Spent ages in JL comparing different tv's. Love the look of the x80 Sony's but they seem to have motion problems in direct comparison and worse upscaling from both SD and HD compared to both the above.
Colour on the 6400 also seems more natural than the Sony which, in 4k, looks absolutely stunning though.
As most content is still SD and HD upscaling is utmost important to me. Both Pana and Samsung do it better than most of the others but I'd give the edge to the 700b which even in the 50" looked very very good in HD. Local dimming too.

HDR is a bit of a non starter on LED anyway. Needs OLED to do properly.

Only question is do I go for 40 or 50?

50 may be better in 4k but 40 certainly looks better in SD and HD from normal distances.

Caveat is that it is nigh on impossible to get settings the same way in a shop, even with manually adjusting it.

Still, give the Pana and Samsung the edge.

Thanks.

After almost three weeks in hospital (nothing serious this time and discharged completely fixed apart from a little recovery time and a dressing for the next week or so) i find myself, unusually, with a little spare cash and a bit of spare time.

Audio is sorted for now (I actually still have a surplus amp) and computer tech is fine, so it’s furniture and TV this time. I have budgeted around £500 for the TV (which seems appropriate) and will cover the suggestions made by everyone here.
