Telarc CDs (Charles Mackerras, Welsh National Opera), or D'Oyly Carte? (Which ones? There are yards of DC recordings.)

Pirates Of Penzance and HMS Pinafore initially.

Thanks.

Although I have heard neither Telarc CD's I have rated, and the Welsh National..... well what can I say. ;-)

We've seen a few Gilbert and Sullivan's in the Hippodrome in Bristol. They're really funny and quite topical, so if you get the chance, don't miss an opportunity. Music is good too.

I've got some of the Telarc series myself, and bought the whole set for my dad a few years ago. They are superb, and mostly live up to the sonic glories of that label too, so seem the most apropriate recommendatiom in a hifi sense. I recall some had tiny cuts to fit them onto a 80 minute disc, but only a fanatic would be bothered, I suspect.

I've an old Mikado on cassette with the DC on Decca, and the actual singing is probably even better. I subsequently got several DC LPs which I've not played for a while.

Agree with Ashley that the Savoy Operas are worth seeing live, even by an amatuer group. Great fun. I once taught myself to sing "I am the very model of a modern Major General" just to see that it was possible to sing that fast. It is!

I have just bought this - well reviewed - Decca CD version of Pirates Of Penzance for £4.99 ...

click

It is the same one that I had been trying out on Apple Music yesterday.

The Telarc CD costs twice as much and would need to be ordered from a 'third party' company with a long delivery time. A pity.

The Linn 16 bit 44.1khz ALAC download (or CD) is £18 and has some mixed customer reviews.

I'm not sure it's much help, but when I was only wee (late 60s/early 70s), the D'Oyly Carte versions were, IIRC generally regarded as the best. They used to appear at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin.

I have no idea how this translates in a recording....but given the reviews of what you went for, it should be good.

For years (as a young boy I must stress) I thought Gilbert & Sullivan was the bloke who wrote that highly dodgy song about his inappropriate affections for his young 'neice' Claire, who wasn't actually his neice in real life but his manager's daughter.
