Front L & R channel distance for HT???

Evening all,

Just having a play about with my front L & R channels in my HT and can't quite decide what distance to have them apart. Is it best to try get them as far apart as possible

I suppose it depends on the size/width of your room and how far you are from them (in the magic triangle). My CM8s are about 2m apart, with listening position at about 2.6m from them...if that helps. Had to play with the toeing-in to find best sound.

Ive moved them further apart considerably and it has seemed to open up the sound much more. I was worried that to much distance apart would massively reduce the lower end (still saving for the sub) however, low end is still very much here, thankfully.

Dolby and THX recommend specific placement for l&r speakers, and rear ones, in a 5.1 setup. They go for the angle between straight ahead being between 22 and 30 degrees, for dolby and 22.5 degrees for thx. What this means, is lots of time with a calculator and trigonometry (or pythagoras' theorem) or just thinking that for every 2m the speakers are apart, your listening position should be between 1.5-1.75m - if you go with their rationale. For your listening distance, of 2.6m, this would mean placing the speakers about 3m to 3.5m apart. If you were just going for pure stereo as well as 5.1 or 7.1 I'd go nearer the lower figure. These are guidelines only, and what sounds best to you is key.
