Freeview HD dilemma

Hi Guys,

OK - so I thought I had decided on my next TV after much deliberation - the TX-L37G10. Although, I'm not fussed about freesat.

However, I'm keen to move to the newly announced Freeview HD once it's available this year!

Seems like 2 options:

1. Get the L37G10 and buy a freeview HD+ recorder (probably the new humax) later in the year when it's released.

2. Wait and get a 2010 equivalent 37inch LCD from the range. But, I'll then need to get a PVR to record on top.

Since the new Panasonic 2010 range will include Freeview HD tuners, I'm now wondering whether it's worthwhile holding off?

Opinions/thoughts?

The 37G10 is a great tv and there is some good bargains out there if you wanted to buy one. If your concerned about the new range of tv's that Panasonic will be bringing out with Freeview HD built in, then it's going to be a hard call. If you hung on and bought one of the new 2010 tv's then you will still need to buy a Freeview HD PVR, so maybe it's not vital having the Freeview HD built in the tv but the dilemma is regarding the performance of the new tv's, that might tempt you to hang on?

Easiest way to help you with your dilemma is either buy the 37G10 at a good price now and get a Freeview HD PVR later or buy the new 2010 Panasonic tv with Freeview HD built in but this would set you back more money as everything that comes out new starts at the highest price and buy also a Freeview HD PVR.

If money is no object, then hang on and see what Panasonic bring out, if you want a great deal then get the current tv now and add the PVR later as either way you still need a PVR.

Thanks for the replies!

It seems like, whichever choice is made, I'd still need to buy the Freeview HD+ box regardless!

1. Get get the L37G10 for about £650 + say, £200-250 for the Freeview HD+ box.

2. Get a 2010 Panny - though I take the point that the new models will be dearer, I assume it'd be atleast £750+. Plus, still have the issue with getting a PVR for the recording.

Moneywise - option 1 looks the better bet.

Why would you also need a Freeview HD+ box with a 2010 TV as Freeview HD will be built in? If you mean the recorder, I take your point although I am assuming that SD recording will still be available on an existing recorder. I shall stick with my presant Sony recorder and leave any thought of recording HD until I see whether it will be worth it.

id be surprised if you would have to pay £750 plus for a 37in panny with built in hd freeview ...

were still in a recession , id have thought £600ish , at least a few months after going on sale , if you can wait...

It's more likely the new 2010 Freeview HD 37" will be atleast or more than £750.00, Panasonic will include a Freeview HD box on a better model, thats what they usually do. So to see one of the new 2010 models including Freeview HD at around £600.00 will be a miracle i think. The price will go down but atleast 4 or 5 months after release, which would be allot of time to wait specially when the new tv's are not due from Panasonic from around april they say.

yeah i suppose they factor in how much an external box would cost , makes sense , assuming they will still do freesat models then that may be the cheaper option , the pricing will be interesting ..

Just to confuse things further, Sony will make three quarters of its 2010 Bravia TVs Freeview HD models in the UK. Details here. No mention of Freeview HD PVRs though.

your right maxflinn, i think every manufacturer will factor in the cost of the Freeview HD box as its a very new format and has not been sold yet to drive the cost down, so for that reason the cost of the Freeview HD box will be included in the price of the tv.

Yes Panasonic are bringing out a new Freesat tv range also, we were told that there will be a normal Freeview range, a Freeview HD range and the Freesat range too. No im not aware if they will have a model that has all 3 formats, that would be a great move but to the consumer, maybe a expensive one.

Regarding price's, it will be very interesting because Panasonic are also doing their 1st LED range of tv's too, so it will be hard to figure out price's yet specially that they do 3D Plasma, 2D Plasma, LED and LCD tv's, it will be a interesting one for sure.
