I've come across a WHF review that is complete nonsense. How can they give the 400 quid Sony UHP-H1 5 stars when Samsung has a new proper 4K player for 30 quid more??

Any player will always excel at what it is primarily designed to do (4K for a UHD player, 1080p for a Bluray player, 576i/p for a DVD player), but the differences will be apparent when any one of those players have to upscale.

Maybe the Sony is a better 1080p Bluray player than the Samsung? Maybe it upscales DVD to 1080p better? DACs might be better? I could go on - there's a lot of aspects to a Bluray player...

For once...

There have been a lot more. Remember the Oppo getting 3 stars when every other review gave it an award/ That was possibly an all time low for the review team. the ipad3 got the usual awards from the magazine, even though Apple dropped it after 6 months and carried on selling the 2.

Not so much 'for once...' as 'yet again...'

That was funny when the Oppo got 3 stars though, loads of people quit after that too!

WHF thought it was not quite as good as a Marantz 6005 cdp, and how much better of a blu-ray player can it be than its cheaper siblings?

I don't believe the new 4k sammy will be such a bad standard blu-ray player

WHF don't think it's as good as the Marantz 6005 cdp, and how much better of a blu-ray player will it be compared to cheaper Sonys?

Also from what I've read the new 4k players play blu rays as good as anything.

I remain unconvinced.

But that's exactly my point, if the main point of buying a movie player is...movies then this Sony is off bets when a pukka Samsung 4k player costs 30 quid more. And I don't believe it will be such a bad HD player.

I stand corrected, from Techradar's review I won't touch the Sammy. Does the Sony do gapless playback on usb though?
