Focal Chorus 714 V - AV Receiver Recommendation

I've never owned a multi-channel receiver but the Focal 714V are superb speakers. Personally I'd be looking at Arcam. Focal and Arcam are a dream match, and you can pick-up AVR 250 or 300 around your budget

Personally I think Pioneer, although fabulous, wouldn't match well with Focals.

Other amps to look at are Yamaha and your recommendation Onkyo.

Do you need a surround sound receiver?

That's really odd. Anyway, I agree with your advice, focals can be pretty bright / edgy so arcam or yamaha makes sense.
