First Hi FI system

Oops, don't know what happened there, but the message should have read about my first Hi Fi system. Does anyone remember their first taste of hi fi? I had one of those rack systems (Toshiba) which was not really hi fi at all. So I dumped it and went for separates. The amp I got was a NAD 3020B, a Dual turntable and a pair of A & R 18s speakers completed the line up. Speaker cables were QED. This was a great sound after the rack and lasted me for a few years. In fact the amp and turntable are still working in a friends system in Spain. Their own cd player and speakers of course. That amp has got to be one of the all time bargains.

My Dad gave me mine when I was about 8 years old!

It was a Pioneer PL-12D turntable, an Amstrad integrated amplifier, and a pair of Wharfedale Chevin speakers (single drive unit!). Not long after he gave me a Sansui AU-2200 amp which I used for several years and which was a big step up from the Amstrad.

Audiotronic ACD 770D cassette deck + Teleton GA203 amp + Standmount Speakers (made in design class, with RS components) + QED 79 strand....circa 1976.

Found picture of cassette deck here.....haven't seen one since 1978! : http://www.vintagecassette.com/Audiotronic/ACD_770D

And amp here (bottom of page) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TELETON-GA203-INTEGRATED-AMPLIFIER-ORIGINAL-MANUAL-/260860919684#ht_500wt_922

First system proper was a Pioneer receiver and tape deck, with a Fisher turntable and Wharfedale Laser 60 speakers. It made a nice sound and was replaced later by a NAD 3020A and a Sony cassette deck when the Pioneer equipment failed.

The one I have now!

I am new at the hi-fi world...even if I am 30! Pity...a lot of wasted time on bad sound...it's time to catch up! 8)

Nice to see the names of that old hi fi again, some of it I remember. But I get a feeling a lot of people started off with the Nad 3020 as their first amp. As far as budget amps go I think that the Marantz Pm6003 or 6004 is the equivalent of that Nad amp. A merry Christmas to all and a prosperous new year.

My first foray into hi-fi comprised of a Denon PMA 250 MK II 30w Amplifier, Linn Basik T/Table with Akito Arm, Denon DRM-500 Cassette Desk, Philips CD player (can't remember the exact model) and Tannoy E11 Speakers with QED 79 speaker cable. It took me around two years of saving to assemble the items. I remember visiting the Doug Brady hi-fi store near Convent Garden to hear a demo of the various components almost on a monthly basis!

Hi Soulsonic34, that phillips cd player, was it a square chunky box? That was my first cd player, I think it was the CD104. At that time I was more interested in my vinyl.

My first " hi fi " cost me £20 all-in in 1990

Second hand CAS 4040 which had been chewed by a dog but still worked. ( £20)

Technics SL DD 33 TT ( leaving present from my first job)

Technics Mash CD - can't remember model but pre- RC ( "inherited" from ex flat mate who left in a hurry)

All played thru floorstanders from my Gran's Bush Music Centre ca 1970.

Memorable sounds.

Denon PMA250 II amp, Technics MASH CD player, Acoustic Research Redbox speakers.

Very nice sound, but Zero bass! small Standmounts speakers have come along way since then.

My first system Sony micro system (one channel still working in kitchen - good for radio in mono!) - the one in my sig is first seperate system - Very nice sound from the Denon SE amp and Klipsch speakers. A large upgrade from the Sony. Also the CA CDP seems to be reliable and good sound for the money. Denon tuner, very impressed for £15.
