Funnily enough Mr Everard has just re-tweeted (as opposed to retweeted) the link to his review of this device:

Thank's for the link to AE's site. Brilliant.

I was missing his excellent WHF blogs lately.

cheers for the tip off, good little review :)

Really looks like it's a bit of a no-brainer if you're in to music on the move, or even a headphone only solution

Must admit I'm giving it some thought for use in the car (heresy I know!) I've had to convert everything to mp3 on my phone, just for space reasons. 64+8GB isn't a huge amount but it's a lot better than what I've got now and should be good enough for the amount of stuff I actually listen to.

And now he's saying you can turn it into a 192/24 asynchronous USB DAC with just a firmware upgrade

http://andreweverard.com/2013/10/28/fiio-adds-24192-asynchronous-dac-function-to-x3-digital-player/

Seems unlikely, given the connections on the Fiio (only micro USB input, and just a headphone-type socket for line out) but if turns out to be true that makes it something of a steal for the money.

That's a bit of an odd thing to say, if it couldn't do that, they wouldn't say it. The USB acts as an asyncronous USB input and there's a 3.5mm line-out (note, NOT a headphone socket, there's a separate one of those), so why is it "unlikely"?

I thought you needed a proper USB Type B square printer-type socket like most DACs have fo asynchronous, and surely a 3.5mm socket can't sound as good as real phono-type outputs. Yes, I know it's a line out, but as I said it's still on one of those piddly mini-headphone sockets.

And anyway, I'm always skeptical about 'reviews' where you don't know why the person writing them is writing them: all sorts of things on the internet look like reviews, but really they're just thinly-disguised promotions for whatever's being talked about.

Presumably someone's paying Everard to write this stuff on 'his' site: if not, why's he doing it?

I had assumed that Mr E was trying to get a large number of subscribers to his site who enjoy his erudite reviewing style. When he gets a fair number, he can then start placing adverts on the site to provide some extra income. I would be unwilling to assume he was on the take without any evidence.

USB is USB, the electrical connections are the same regardless of the shape of the socket.

I shouldn't think it makes any real difference.

I've always thought it was a bit odd he puts the entire article in the emails that go out, meaning there's no need to actually visit the site at all, surely that'll reduce the traffic?

Agree completely, that surprised me too.
