am i right in thinking a squeezebox sits next to your amp and speakers, and is basically able to process music streamed from your pc/laptop over your wireless network?

is this different to storing your music on a hard drive which is connected to an amp? i assume the squeezebox doesn't store any data?

i think i prefer the idea of having the music stored on a hard drive next to the hifi, so not streaming, and being able to access this either via the network to transfer songs over, or via cable.

does anyone use a setup like this at all. im still on the fence, i want to revisit my youth and collect a few cd albums again but also looking for the best long term solution. interesting all this hi-fi stuff!

Yes thats right. The squeezebox connects to your wireless network and streams music from your hard drive, rather than storing it. The benefit to this method being that you don't have to have a hard drive or pc sat in your sitting room.

Why do you prefer a connected hard drive? If its quality don't worry - A typical home network has more than enough bandwidth for music. Its the quality of the ripped music thats the issue - streamed OR connected.

Cmon get involved - buy a squeezebox or similar - apples airport express works well (ideal for cheap multiroom). Then buy a dac to process the signal properly before it hits your amp and maybe shell out on an ipod touch or iphone too to control remotely.

I promise you you'll never look back!

Hi olneyben. You could get a network hard drive which allows you to either connect the hard drive to PC by usb or wirelessly by connecting it to your router with an ethernet cable. These drives are designed to run very quietly, if not silently and you can get a lot of storage space for your money (the Buffalo Drive station 2 share is 1TB at just over £100) If you do not expect to use the ethernet/router/wirless capabilty then usb hard drives versions are even cheaper.
