Ex-Display AV Receiver - Risky?

Hi,

I am buying my first home cinema setup and have seen a PIONEER VSX922 at my local Richer Sounds store but it is ex-display.

I have read the reviews on this and it seems to be pretty damn good in its price range. It is priced at £199 and considering WHAT HIFI marked it 5/5 at £250, i am pretty tempted.

My question to you guys is, is buying ex-display risky when coming to AV Receivers. I know to stay away from ex-display TV's as they are often on for long hours and have the brightness ramped up to the highest which can reduce the overall screen brightness in the long run.

Any guidence on the above would be much appreciated.

Hi Coops.

I spent half a decade working for Richer. Chances are it's never been switched on. £199 is an amazing price for something that originally retailed at £499.

I'm sure that if you ask them nicely they will dust it for you.

I would definitely get the warranty at the same time. £20, refundable if you don't use it and pays for any fault the amp could develop.

I bought my Pioneer VSX-2021 from Richers as a model returned by a customer, potentially an even more dodgy scenario, but it's been great for over a year now and I've been extremely happy with it. Saved from £800 original RRP to £500, so smiles all the way.

AV receivers are a little different to stereo amps in this respect. A good stereo amp is always a good stereo amp, but AV receivers can get more quickly out-dated (HDMI, DTS & DolbybHD, 3D & dare I say "Spotify Connect") so on principle I'd never pay full price for one. I'd just take the bargain in the knowledge that it might be out-dated in 3-4 years like your average PC.

Having worked in HIFi stores the only thing to look out for is knocks and scrapes.

The amp itself, as suggested, will likely of had light or maybe no use.

If it has been demed that is when a scrape or knock occurs - getting them off the shelves and into the dem room. Of course this will only be cosmetic so performance wise would not be an issue.

IME Richers is a good place to deal with and the staff are often helpful and knowledgeable, I'd be surprised if they don't describe it as it is when you speak to them

Ex-display amps aren't like tvs. They *generally* aren't on 12 hours a day to display. They may get switched on now and then for the odd demo, but you'll more than likely be fine.

At least you'll know it all works before taking it home and it won't (or shouldn't) make any difference to your warranty because it still counts as brand new.
