Ever heard of a Buttkicker?

A few members have asked me about the Buttkicker in my home cinema setup thread, which made me realise that a lot of members don't really know what it is & how much difference it can make to your home cinema experience. So I thought I'll start a thread on it.

Buttkicker is a low frequency audio transducer. There are other brands making similar products & work on the same principal.

When my friends & relatives experience my home cinema for the first time, most of the discussion actually is about the Buttkicker! If you ask me to name ONE equipment in my setup that has made the biggest difference to my movie watching experience, it is undoubtedly the Buttkicker.

Quoting from their website:

"ButtKicker brand low frequency audio transducers are musically accurate, powerful, virtually indestructible and patented linear transducers, which recreate amplified audio signals in the feeling range. They are similar to loudspeakers, but instead of moving a cone, and transferring sound waves through the air, they attach to seats, floors, platforms etc, and send low frequency sound directly into the listener's body. The effect is amazing.

It takes two senses to perceive full range sound. We hear sound, but we also feel sound, especially low frequency. Traditionally, it has taken big speakers, moving tremendous amounts of air, to feel the low frequency of sound. People like loud concerts because they want to feel the sound pressure in their bodies.

However, ButtKicker transducers reproduce the feeling range of audio in a more direct way than through air. The perception is actually better and sound pressure disappears. When using headphones, for example, with ButtKicker brand transducers, the listener perceives powerful, musically accurate, concert-level audio, but no one else hears anything. The sound is completely isolated to the listener.

This becomes very interesting for music monitoring and recording studios. Over one hundred of the top touring bands use ButtKicker products for stage monitoring because of the complete control they give them over their mix and sound level, without sacrificing any quality. Most musicians tell us immediately that they hear better and play better when using ButtKicker transducers.

In a recording studio, ButtKicker transducers allow for low volume, incredible isolation and, because they were designed to be musically accurate, to fractions of frequencies, studio engineers are finding that their mixes are coming out tighter, cleaner and better balanced.

Music writers, producers and studio musicians who do soundtrack work for commercial companies and stage show producers, in large commercial facilities or smaller home studios are beginning to rely on ButtKicker brand low frequency audio transducers to check the accuracy of their mixes."

Did you have similar discussions when your neighbours first experienced your setup?

Seriously though, do you isolate your couch from the floor somehow, or does the vibration not carry over to the floor? I turn the bass down at night because of the neighbours. Any idea how the vibration of a buttkicker compares to the vibration caused by a subwoofer?

Well, actually mine is a detached house with a carpeted floor. So no problems with the vibrations in my setup for the neighbours

The vibrations from the buttkicker are not bad though, they tend to remain confined to the sofa in which the Buttkicker is attached. I have another sofa just next to the main sofa, & I just cannot feel anything when I'm sat there.

The subwoofer causes much more powerful vibrations because the waves are transmitted through air, unlike the Buttkicker which directly transfers it to the sofa.

Very interesting. If it is possible to contain the vibrations to the sofa, this might be able to provide some kick in a home cinema in old appts (like mine). I have to use my setup very carefully, since the LFE rattles plates in my downstairs neighbour's kitchen even at low volumes... Not to mention their dog that tends to start howling to explosions or cars rumbling on screen.

I was looking at these abt a year ago and even posted here looking for opinions and experiences. I remember it was dismissed as a gimmick in the thread then. However it looks interesting to me. I think if used subtly it shoudl be able to add the right effect. Would love to try - anybody does demos?

Presumably then you just need one buttkicker per sofa is that right? or do you need one for each seat within that sofa?

I only ask as have no knowledge of it.

If your floor is not carpeted, you can try placing it on a small piece of carpet or rubber, or anything that can soak up the vibrations if any, & see if it helps. I remember demoing it at a store which had a wooden floor. I couldn't feel any vibrations, although I didn't pay much attention to it.

Sevenoaks in Sheffield does demos. Not sure about anyone else. Try your local Sevenoaks.

The amplifier can support upto 4 units. You can place as many units as you like. 1 is usually enough per sofa. I have only 1 unit for my 3-seater. You can always add another if you need a more powerful effect.

Bigboss just done a quick search and this buttkicker thing is only £80, does that sound right? I expected it to be at least a couple of hundred quid.

SamsonD:You seem quite free, for a doctor.

How long before people start targetting bigboss with medical problems here? Maybe going in the mag might not turn out to be your greatest idea!

Back on subject.

Went to a Home Cinema demo in one of the Disney parks in Florida a few years ago. A talk by the manufacturers first, followed by a demo.

So we are taken into this "Home Cinema" room of about 30 seats and they played some clips from "Armageddon". When the Shuttles took off the seats were shaking and vibrating. Quite impressive though I don't think I would like something like that at home.

No, it's not right. I spent £575 on it last year. Look for the ButtKicker LFE kit.

The effect is very realistic & gives you the experience of actually "being in the scene". For example, in the opening sequence of I am Legend when Will Smith is driving his car, the sofa vibrates only when the shots are of inside the car & not outside, as if you're sitting in the car! I enjoy it.

This is just ridiculous Tarq. £575 for a piece of kit that someone considers the coolest bit of his home cinema sounds like peanuts to me (especially considering the rest of Big Boss's kit). There's people that spend that kind of money on cable upgrades.

Exactly my point. Thanks KevinOK!

I'm happy with my £5 HDMI cables & the freebie Chord Active I got for WHF subscription, & also with my cheapie Panasonic BD60. Money saved on these = Money spent on the ButtKicker!
