Ethernet Splitter?

Hi there,

SInce i received my PS3 i had wireless speed issues and never understood why my PS3 was gettign such a slow connection when my laptop in the same room and connection got full 14meg speed.

I since bought powerline homeplugs - and this has solved the problem with my PS3, hard wired it and i now get full speed and an "electrical supply" internet LAN.

SInce my Bluray player been upadte for DB LiVE content i would also like to connect it to the internet, but can i split the EThernet from the homeplug and connect it to both BD player and PS3? or is this just too simple to think of doing this?

They are not suitable for telephones or for sharing a Broadband connection.

This means this will not work for me should i need to split the info coming form my wall socket and plugged into my PS3 and BD Player?

How's your network set up at the moment? Specifically, where's the broadband modem, and do you have a router (wired or wirelss) attached to it?

Use a switch box. I have a Powerline in the wall next to the AV setup and then a switch box (Netgear), which allows me to plug all the devices into it and then to the Powerline. Works fine with my 360, PS3, Blu-ray, HD-DVD and amp all plugged into it.

I've read the explanation, they mean that just using ONE in your wall socket doesn't work. You need to put a second one at the other end of the cable from your wall socket, and connect both to your switch/router.ÿ

Thank you for your replys much appreciated.

It seems Voodoo has the same set-up as i do.

My main PC and modem are in the bedroom on my flat. Main PC connected harwire to wireless modem, and powerline plug in mains in the bedroom.

In the living room i have the other powerline plug and one Ethernet cable running to my PS3.

I would like to use the ADSL output of the powerline to both my PS3 and BD Player.. it seems i need to get one of them boxes 🙂

You need a router on the end of the second powerline thingie, though tbh am having trouble finding one that's wired. And frankly, I wouldn't be using powerline anywhere near any audio visual equipment......

Edit, yes everybody's said it already. Get a switch like that one you mention, there's one on ebay for 20+ quid.

But I'd still not use powerline if you're at all interested in sound quality...

Yup, although Netgear FS605 10/100 switch will work just as well and save you some money (unless you have more than 4 components which need plugging in, in which case go for the 8 port).

The sound Quality will degrade with a powerline network connected? Would a remedy of buying for example the special power multiplug designed for AV equipment help?

I need the powerline for now as my PS3 does not seem to like wireless connection and is very slow depsite all the things i tried to fix it - and it was either buyign a new modem or extend my net through the electrical supply.

As far as music is concerned - i do listen to music a lot - and had the same equipment for quite some time now and i have not noticed any downgrade in sound form my amp and speakers since i installed the powerline, maybe cause my equipment is not the best maybe - but as i am lookign to upgrade to a "musical" 5.1 system i might have to be careful if it does degrade sound sound much..

What other ways can i get wired connection in my living room when the set up is in my bedroom? Buyign antoher netgera wireless router picking up the wifi formn the one in the bedroom and then hard wiring to my PS3 and BD Player? is that possible?

I now going to find out in more details the cause of powerline nets with sound quality, and will either buy yoru recommendation or change the whole set-up which i rather not to..

Have a look at this thread. If you already have a wireless network and the PS3 can't connect because of bad signal, you can get a wireless extender put in your living room and extend the range so the PS3 can then pick it up okay.

Yes, I've heard a powerline demod in a (very revealing, admittedly) system and the difference was obvious and deleterious. I think it would be worthwhile persevering with sorting out your wireless network (which should certainly handle your 14gig internet no problem).

And yes, a wireless extender is what I would use to do that (if the router upstairs is wireless). Google something like a Belkin Range Extender (or Linksys or Netgear blah blah).

OK, because I don't have a PS3 I can't speak for any aprticular issues you may be having, though maybe professorhat can answer as he's the PS3 guru around here. May be worth putting a PS3-titled post in the 'Computer-Based' or 'Wifi' sections to see if there are solutions to that particular issue before going forward.

Well, I don't actually use wireless for my PS3 as wireless speed is not really good enough for streaming video (802.11g isn't at any rate IME). However, I can certainly switch to wireless mode and see how it performs. What exactly is slow when you use the wireless connection for the PS3?

Hi,

Slow - for example it does not even connect property to the network with my username - for example when i first plyed GT5 prologue - it never finshed the update and it took more than 10 minutes to get to 50% to then disconnect (hardwired it did it in a flash) - it just did not respond very well at all...
