Energy saving plugs....thoughts?

like the idea, but on the other hand i heard that cold turning on/off
gear can damage it? If thats true is it kinda pointless saving money on
electricity if it ends up damaging a £700 tv or a £300 dvd player?

Anyway, anyone got any thoughts, good bad or whatever?
