end of dvd players?

I'd be surprised if things move this quickly to be honest. DVD is still selling well and the price of discs these days means that its going to take something drastic to kill it off quickly. However, Blu-Ray players are selling very well (certainly in our store) and I notice more and more shops are expanding their range of titles. With the trend towards hard disk based recorders and the increasing popularity of services like BBC iplayer and now the ITV Player I think there will be a demise in DVD recorders.

I think the next thing could be Blu-ray players with built-in freeview and hard drive recording. I can't see Blu-ray ever taking off as a writable media for recording TV but a unit which allows BD playback with Freeview+ functionality could be the way ahead.

It will be interesting to see how things develop. At least there is backwards compatibility and the upscaling features of Blu-ray players will mean that we can continue getting the best out of our extensive DVD collections well into the future.

Now blu-ray is "the" format things will move quickly to get one in every home. A lot of the companies involved in player production also have interests in film production eg sony~columbia so they can afford to subsidise players to reap rewards in film sales, so blu-ray capability on a "bog standard" player will come about fairly soon, or just as soon as everyone willing to pay a price point has paid it they'll creep down, like all technology.

What they won't want to do is repeat the minidisc~dcc fiasco where neither really took off big time, they'll want to get compatible boxes in houses so people go shopping and think "yeah, lets pay more for the HD version"

Exhibit a, the playstation 3.

Even Blu-ray Disc Association acknowledges it'll probably be Christmas 2012 before Blu-ray players outsell DVD - let alone before they replace them. Mind you, the industry seriously underestimated how fast flatscreens would take over....

What is almost dead in the water, however, is the high-end DVD player - well, new releases, anyhow. DVD players are retreating to the @sub-£100 space, and that's when the supermarkets/online/electrical multiple stores take over and specialists such as AV Land can't compete. Totally understand their decision, therefore.

Interesting thoughts comments.

As i have now got a BD player and as the SEK is still strong against the £ i have been looking for DB discs and have found that the availability is still very "limited" ... A few 100 DVD for sale and 6 BD on display in a small stand... (largish super market) Tescos/Sainsburys/Asda still seem to have smallish displays, Even Zavvi and HMV have less on display that the local ICA supermarket i normally buy my DVD's at.

Well i now have 20 BD's and a player for what it would have cost for just the player back in Sweden. Must see what else i can get before going back.

Would certainly agree with Clare on this point. I cannot see any manufacturing producing high-end DVD players any more. Why would they??
