End of a TV Era

It is a shame to see that a technology which was pioneered in the UK is no longer manufactured here, but it just makes greater short term sense, I guess, for production to move to lower wage economies - as consumers we won't complain. On the other hand the loss of so many manufacturing and engineering jobs across several industries is certainly not good news, and if those people don't have the money to buy these products, then all these companies which have taken production overseas may begin to regret their decision.

I appreciate that Strictly come dancing, weakest link, who wants to be a millionaire and pop idol have proved popular around the world, but if the term "world-leading content" is applied to these (in my opinion, hardly fantastic) shows then how exactly should we refer to shows like the west wing, the sopranos and the wire, to name but a few.

The UK doesn't make world leading content. Yes there are good shows (spooks, state of play, the office) but most are fairly short lived. We don't have the financial resources on the scale of the americans to produce the same sort of high quality tv content. Having said that, their system is by no means flawless, with a lot of rubbish and far too great an emphasis on ratings and an over reliance on adverrtising.

Interesting article though.
