Hi

I own an LCD TV Samsung Full HD 46''. When I play my DVDs using my old DVD player, the image quality is quite poor. If I try it with Divx/Xvid movies it performs even worse.

I have bought a Pioneer DV-410 v-k and the image is a little better (I have just seen its review in this web). Anyway I'm not going to keep it as I have noticed that it has been used.

I'm going to buy a computer for my living room and I would like you to give some advice about the better way to get more quality from my DVD /divx/xvid films:

-Should I buy anothe upscaling DVD player? (if so, please recommend me one model under 100€)

-Or should I connect the new computer to my LCD TV? I think this would be the better choice, but I wold like to know what upscaling software I should use and what graphic card could work fine. And should I connect it to the TV using the PC wire or an HDMI wire from the graphic card?

Thak you very much

Hi,

You're comparing apples with oranges, aren't you? How much were you thinking of spending on the PC? In any case if you watch a lot of divx / xvid files then you might be better off with a PS3 and an external USB hard drive. Or for a little bit more money you could get a PS3 and a network hard drive / NAS. LaCie's Network Space is very cheap, includes an embedded media server capable of streaming to the PS3 and comes in nicely coordinating gloss black. DVD playback is a match for any £100 DVD player that I've seen and it plays Blu Ray discs and games too.

The Pioneer DVD player is not recommended at all (2 stars) why would you buy that over the Toshiba XD-E500 ?

check the reviews of things before buying.

I can personally vouch for the Pioneer LX50 (I bought one off ebay for 230 quid) for upscaled dvds

The upscaled picture blows most away (Certainly blows the PS3s away)

PCs can do a very good job, but the cost equation isn't clear here. Also, they will always be nosier than a DVD player, depending on where it is and how noisy it is that may or may not be an issue.

I'm going to spend about 400 ? on the computer. I'm not going to use it just to see films. I guess for that price I'll get better quality than with a DVD player, won't I?
