Hi guys im kinda new to the pc scene, was just wondering whats the pro's and con's of downloading? Is it safe? If so are there any recommeded sites?

You can purchase & download legally and safely from iTunes etc. Illegal downloading is a crime & you won't get any suggestions here. Besides, a lot of these illegal sites can infect your computer with viruses. Stay legal & stay safe.

Bit contraversial this, but also there are applications out there which allow you to download TV programmes/films from iPlayer, which of course is another safe site to procure material from. The legality of doing this is dubious, even if you're only doing it for yourself (ie not redistributing), but back in the day, hands-up anyone who never even once taped a favourite programme or film onto video-tape so you could watch it again whenever you wanted to...

OK, here is a controversial question for you. Completely theoretical you see...

You legally purchase a large box set on DVD as they are not available on iTunes, and even if it were the price would be far from sensible. Something like all seven seasons of ST:TNG. Thats 49 disks! So, your options are to sit down and rip all of them to your NAS drive, which would take forever, or to torrent them to your NAS, which you could set off before bed and be done by morning.

The Gene Roddenberry estate already (theoretically you see ;) ) has the proposers cash. Ripping DVD's is still illegal in the UK as bypassing the DVD's TPM system is frowned upon. So, my question, why is tormenting something you already own frowned upon yet ripping DVD's is freely spoken about on the forum?

The issuse is that specifically with b1torrent is that you share as you download. So you are then supplying copyrighted material to other people.

However, in some places, Netherlands for example, it's not illegal to purely download, case in point being your scenario as descibed above. However, once you start sharing that out, it becomes a no go area.

Copyright is a complex PITA, that even those making/enforcing the rules don't seem to have any idea about.

yep, and here's some proof it's all a load of bullpoo http://www.geekosystem.com/studios-ask-to-remove-own-sites/

 :wall:

Plus, the most high profile case against the pirate bay proves that's it's just the companies trying to make money for themselves, not the "poor artists" as they often like to refer to...
