Hi,

Just wondering if this device can affect the sound quality of an amplifier. Is it really beneficial to have a toroidal transformer in your amp for it to produce a better sound? Cheers.

Some use toroidal ones, some use the old fashioned frame ones. It's not really down to which is best, as a well designed frame transformer can sound better than a poorly designed toroidal one. Generally, frame ones are cheaper, but used correctly they're no lesser.

In theory a toroidal transformer should be better as it produces less electromagnetic noise.

The latest Linn amplifiers use a switch-mode power supply (like a PC does). Theoretically it's the noisiest supply of the lot, but somehow it manages to work very well. It's also cheaper to make (i.e more profitable for the manufacturer), uses less raw material, and as the finished product is much lighter, it is cheaper to ship.

But in answer to the question "Does your amp have a toroidal transformer?" I have two amps with toroidal transformers (Creek and Linn), one with a square transformer (Leak Stereo 30), and one with switch-mode (Linn).
