Given the compression wars and the vast difference between volume levels on new vs old recordings, does volume leveling in your software change the actual music in the rip, or is it more akin to moving the volume control?
It only affects playback. As far as I can see the latest version of Bit Perfect no longer has a Sound Check function. Including such a function on earlier versions always seemed a bit odd to me.
My title may have been a bit misleading - I was not intending to refer to Bit Perfect the software specifically, but rather rips in general and whether they would still be perfect copies of the actual music if sound leveling was applied.
Somtimes the big difference between playback levels of songs in the NASand having to make regular volume adjustments is just an unnecessary aggrevation.
I believe the overall loudness of the a track is controlled by the ReplayGain metadata tag so changing this will not affect your bit perfect rip. Not all playback software uses the tag. Since the ReplyGain is applied digitally, the playback will no longer be bit perfect.
