Does iTunes use quicktime for video playback??

I was just wondering if iTunes uses quicktime to play back video files. If not, can it be made to??

I ask this because I recently bought the HD version of Eclipse on iTunes. If I play it back via iTunes it is very jerky which is quite annoying.

However, if I play it back with Quicktime it is absolutely fine.

Any ideas why this may be the case? I assumed iTunes utilised quicktime??
