do i need a separate phono stage?

I've got a TEAC Reference 300 mark 2 mini system, and my wife would like to get a turntable hooked up to it so she can re-live her youth. I'm thinking of getting a Pro-ject Genie for it. Would I need any additional equipment, such as a phono stage? Excuse my ignorance, I'm something of a vinyl virgin - my own youth was largely cassette-based...
