Hey there, first post here.

I am currently running a basic DM39 with Zensors 1. I have finally convinced the other half that i need to upgrade and was looking at either the LS50 or 685 s2. Problem is, i am not going to upgrade the amp just yet (let's give this another 6 months).

So, question is, will the DM39 be able to produce anything that sounds good with either of these?

(I live very far from any kind of hifi retailer, so demo'ing is not an option)

Cheers.

I wouldn't bother. Put the money aside and wait until you can upgrade the amp as well. The little Denon is fine, but not up to the speakers you are considering.

Ha! Matthew tells it how it is! I think it is good advice.

Hi there. I'm looking into this again now that i have a bit more time.

so to repeat the question: how are the 685 S2 with the PM6005?

I've seen some mention of the RA-12 working well with the 686 S2 (despite the lackluster What Hifi review for this amp), but would rather avoid the extra expense if the PM6005 does a good job. I mention these two amps because i'm looking for onboard DAC (explaining to the wife why i need another expensive piece of hardware would kill my marriage *bomb*)

We are talking about a room 4mx4m. I listen to all types of rock with some jazz when i am in the mood.

cheers.

Aim for what you really want and save for it, buy right and buy once.

If the LS50s are what you have set your mind on, I'm sure they would sound perfectly acceptable within the limits of the DM39, ie low to moderate volumes.

They won't sound 'bad' per se, until you start pushing the Denon too hard.
