Hello,

A newbie question.

What is the significant difference between DivX and Xvid and what should one look out for while looking for a Personal Media Player (such as Creative Zen or Cowon)?

Is it important that a device support both? Or, is the support for one of them more important than the other?

Any advice on suggested devices that support these (among PMPs)?

Thanks in advance.

Xvid is a codec that's a competitor, if you like. At the time they were both released they were looking to become the standard, which arguably you could say DivX has won.

I've got a Zen Vision:M which has a DivX player built in. It supposedly supports DivX, XVid, MPEG 1/2/4, and WMV's. I've found that 95% of the movies I watch on there are fine. The only issues I've had are newer DivX files, and ones that have had a different audio encoding to MP3. AC3 and others are more common these days, and not supported on the Zen
