What part of my setup do I need it for?

I (eventually) have a sony STR-DG820. My TV has no digital optical output. My Sky HD and HD DVD player both do. Am I right in thinking I only need the connetion between Sky HD and the receiver? And the HD DVD player will carry the sound direct to the receiver via HDMI?

 Many thanks.

Magic, ta. Almost getting the hang of this.

All this talk of coaxial; is that just how the wire is wired, or something more? E.g. if I got one of these coaxials would it fit in the same slots as my digital optical ports, or does it plug in elsewhere?

coaxial digi and optical digi are two different ways of carrying the digital signal and use different connectors. you will see them on the back of the units.

Thought I had this sussed, but still not quite there!....

Where does the digital coaxial plumb out of the SkyHD box?! Both ends of my cable look like standard interconnects. The output labelled "digital" on my SkyHD is a different kind of connection. Do I need a converter. Or does the cable plug in to one of the interconnect sockets?ÿ

Sounds like you have one of the older SkyHD boxes that only has an optical output, so you'll need a digital optical cable rather than digital co-ax,

Hmmm, yeah, half an hour of searching more and I think I've just realised the same! I have a Thomson; is it only the Samsungs with the digital coaxial?

I can still use the coaxial on my music system, so not a complete loss. Cheers!ÿ
