Did I score or did I buy a turkey?

Our Samsung UN55JU6500 got a cracked screen this weekend.

Went out tonight and got an ex display UN55JS8500 for US$1083 including sales tax, knocked down from US$4200 incl. tax.

Did I score or have I just bought a turkey?

It's ****ing annoying even after jst ten minutes of setting the thing up, which, by the look of it, is going to take me until the 12 month warranty runs out....

The picture's certainly better than the 6500 series it replaced. Watched "The Martian" last night (still disappointed that Marvin the Martian didn't make a cameo appearance - or at least I haven't spotted him yet). Brighter colors, and yes, blacker blacks (whoever thought that up probably had a parent who worked on 70s soap powder commercials). Haven't even bothered to try "calibrating" it yet - and probably won't. Need to watch an action movie to see how the motion is.

We also got a Samsung 48JU6700 curved (shudder) for the master bedroom, so Her Majesty can now watch her soaps in peace, for US$1080.

Someone has been splashing the cash.

12 months' interest free.

The Superbore, sorry, bowl, has been and gone so there won't be a peak in TV buying here again until, I don't know, Memorial Day at the end of May or maybe even next Thanksgiving at the end of November.

Went to hook up the new Onkyo 8050 receiver last night and there's no dgital audio fibre optic (or co-ax) output on the back of the US version of the 8500. Given that there's not one on the Amazon Fire box either, and given there's no HDMI input on the receiver, that means I can only recover 2-channel audio from the TV via a 3-way (video plus audio left and right) 3.5 mm jack / 3 x RCA splitter cable (supplied with the TV). Not that I need 5.1 or 7.1, given I'm feeding a 2-channel receiver anyway, but...

Might be a bit of a shortcoming for some people, so I thought I'd mention it (even if some other people just think I'm doing so to brag about my new TV....)

It certainly would be a shortcoming, and not just a bit of one, for me - no chance of 5.1 audio out when watching the football would be a deal-breaker! Thanks for letting us know.

I guess their thinking is people use their TVs more as monitors with a surround sound receiver or sound ba / base rather than stand alone TVs. Not a problem if you connect aeriel / dish to box to receiver to TV.

Either that or they had a budget cost and something had to go to meet it.

Not that much of a problem for me as we don't want surround sound in the living room anyway. Just using a stereo (not surround sound) receiver to feed in ceiling speakers for background music and thought it would be nice to connect the TV and Fire box as well. The media room is for rocking out time...
