As a current owner of a Denon AVR-1906 (a What Hi-Fi awards winner in 2005), i'm on the cusp of upgrading. I've loved my Denon amp for both movies and music, and now want to take advantage of my Blu-Ray collection and the hi-def audio on it. Out of these 2 amps which are both available for around £400, what would the What Hi-Fi team recommend? As i've enjoyed my current Denon amp, would I be advised to stick to their sonic qualities, or is it time to try the Sony? The amp will be paired with my current set of Kef KHT-1005.1 eggs, a PS3 and Sony 40W4500, though the speakers will probably be upgraded at some point in the distant future! Many thanks in advance.

We've got a Group Test of AV amps/receivers, including the AVR-1909 and 2400ES, coming up in our December issue, on sale next month. Well worth waiting for the results of that I think.

Surely an upgrade is not needed if you are using the PS3 as the HD source. So long as your receiver accepts PCM over HDMI then it will be fine as the PS3 does the decoding on board and sends the multichannel signal over PCM. In fact even if you upgrade, the receiver will not show the new format, as the PS3 cannot output the raw HD formats.

P.S. Pudley, the Denon AVR-1906 I have from 2005 doesn't have HDMI inputs - that amp was bought waaaay before that became standard on budget amps.

Having just read the latest issue with the group test of AV receivers, I now seem to be veering towards the Sony 2400ES. Which is just as well as it can be bought for £380 at quite a few places at the moment. One final question for the What Hi-Fi team, do you think this amp will go well with the Kef 2005.3 speakers? They're at the upper end of my price limit, but if you think these will pair with the Sony as well as they would with the Denon, it's a Sony purchase for me this weekend! Thanks in advance for your help.
