On that amp the multichannel analogue in works as a pass-through - ie signal goes straight from the input via the volume control to the onboard power amp section, without going anywhere near the digital signal processing. It's designed to give the purest possible sound.

Not sure whether there'd be any point, given that you're only running a 5.1 input from the BD player, with no way of processing out the extra channels for 7.1. It'd work with the Virgin input, however, as this is going through the digital signal processing.

If you wanted to use the extra amp and get 7.1, the solution would be to get a Blu-ray player with a 7.1-channel output, and use the Denon's lower set of analogue inputs, which gives 7.1-channel in.
