Deleting duplicate itunes songs

Hi all,

This is my first post in this area so don't know if this is a common question over in these far flung places. Usually, I am happy over in the HIFI section.

I have a large itunes folder and have many duplicates.

When I "show duplicates", I have 46gb.

What is the best way to delete the duplicates but keep the files with the highest bitrate. I do not want to spend a week going through them individually.

Couldn't you create a smart playlist which contained just the lower bit-rate songs, view that playlist, press Ctrl + a to select all the songs, right click to bring up menu then select delete? I'm sure JD or one of the other i-Tunes experts will be better informed.

PS Just try this with a couple of songs high lighted in case it goes belly up.

Does iTunes consider different bit rates to be duplicates? I forget.

Anyhoo, there's a mechanism for doing so, let me find it...

Just found "Dupe Eliminator". It has a 3 day trial. Is it any good?

I'm on a Mac. If you hit control while clicking on file "show duplicates' changes to "show exact duplicates". I'm sure that the same thing applies to a PC. this will totally narrow your search.

Cheers for the suggestion. That would eliminate some. I would also like to eradicate the duplicates that are of less quality.
