Did you not fancy moving "forward" to streaming?

Which cdp have you decided on?

Me neither but maybe eventually. I'm just not that confident with computer networks etc and am happy with cd for now. I have ordered a few sacd's to see how they sound but they haven't arrived yet.

What made you choose the naim? I know you have given it a lot of thought and demos. Did you try the xs?

Well it's all about SQ, looks, although would be nice to match, isn't the be all... and the Rega Dac wasn't worth £500 when using the Arcam as transport. When I heard the 5i-2 against the Rega it had more attack and sounded far more cohesive.

BTW, I can understand the virtues of dacs when used in conjunction with streaming devices, but to boost an already very good CDP... no, not for me.

Well sq should be the most important reason although some items are hard to get past the other half. I personally like the naim look, no frills, nice and slim, just hifi kind of thing. Unfortunately I have not heard any naim stuff as I'm very limited for dealers nearby and the ones I have don't stock them. Is the cd5i-2 flatcap upgradable?

Naim Nait CD5i-2.

I'm confused, PP. The Nait is an amp range. The current CDP models seem to include the CD5si or the CD5 XS (unless you robbed a bank!). So is this a previous generation CDP?

If so, I'm sure it's a great buy and will give you hours of enjoyment.

PS. When you become an Naim nerd you'll insist that the i is in italics!

Deffo this one http://www.whathifi.com/review/naim-cd5i-mk-ii%29

Is a nerd and "Naim nerd" the same thing? I certainly fall into the former... ;)

The dealer has offered me at leats £200 for the Arcam, and this ex-dem model is selling for £650, which works out, on £200 figure, £450 for a £900 machine. On the maths basis it sounds like a bargain - if it turns out to be a plumb I can return it, but gut feeling alone I'm a confident bunny.

It's always nice to get good deals, makes the whole thing sweeter and you'll still maintain good residual price for when you want to upgrade in the future.

Enjoy. :)

Good luck with the CD5i PP.

Keep the box and all packaging (remember the transit bolt) and instructions and Naim interconnect (and even the freebie Naim CD).

This will all add at least £100 when/if you come to sell it. (I got £550 + P&P for mine two years ago.)

Don't take it back to the dealer if you don't like it.

It's mint and new (ok 'ex demo') so you should get more back from a private sale (even allowing for fees). And wait until after Naim's April price rises. That's when Naim typically raise their prices making good second-hand items even more sought after.

It's what I did and my CD5i was bitten from my hand within hours of listing it!

Hadn't given any thought to reselling the item, if and when. Certainly in fabulous nick and only used in the dealers for dem purposes.

Cheers.

+1 for all of that.

Bizarrely, I remember the posts about your CDP sale.

I've also read Chebby's write-up of the Naim combo on another site in 2008.

Congratulations! It's a big day when PP finally settles on and purchases a new bit of kit, although I'm having trouble getting my head around your system not containing any Arcam kit

Congrats, excellent cd player, very nearly bought one myself with the matching amp, I was suprised how close it was to the xs cd player, I couldn't justify the extra money for the xs player as thought the 5i was that good.

I am sure you will get intrigued at some point how that pairing or with the xs amp compares with Naim/leema set up.

As a stand alone amp I prefer the Leema but the Naim amp/cd pairing may give it a run for it's money.

Speakers next eh !?

Enjoy.

Over the last year I purchased a fair number of new kit, although not much hi-fi (new TV, HD tuner, speaker cables, Denon tuner x 2...).

No mystery about not having Arcam. I still love the brand but owned Arcam stuff since 1997 so fancied a change. That started with the Leema and now, soon to be, the Naim CDP.

Oddly, the dealer said, that unless the buyer demands the CD5XS they always use the CD5i-2 as a starting point.

Have to confess, didn't like the 5i amp on my system - too fatiguing. But with the Leema doing the donkey work they should match nicely. They certainly share a lot of sonic traits.

Apologies PP, I was focused on your ongoing trials and tribulations, will-I-or-won't-I goings on regarding speakers and CDP/DAC.
