Hi,

I was lucky enough to pick up a pair of Avi Neutron v's in good nick on Ebay for £240.. I can't wait til i get to try them out as they were the speakers i have been eyeing up for ages.

I currently own a Cambridge 640A but am concerned that there may not be enough kick to drive the Avi's - will 65 watts be enough? - I have also seen a Cambridge 840 V1 amp currently ebay that may go for about £200. Has anyone got any experience of this amp or even better, that paired with the Avi's? Will the combo be a bit on the bright side?

Your fantastic advice, as always, will be appreciated!

Thx guys🙂

So you're who got in there and got them, before I could get budgetary approval

I was going to pair them with my lonely A85, so that would be my recommendation

Well done, and let us know how you get on with them.

The 840 with the AVIs would be excellent. Chuck in a small sub like a REL Quake and you'll have a very articulate and dynamic system.

Hopefully they'll as sound as good as they look and hopefully a significant step up from my MS 902i's !!

I've already had the live wire neighbour with insane eyes from upstairs knocking at my door to tell me to turn the volume down (a one off sat night party i might add) - i think i would 'go missing' if i plugged in a Sub!!

Haha, fair play! The Neutrons are a very good speaker and very engaging, sub or no sub. A classic and a good purchase.

Hi,

In follow up to my previous post, I have been outbid twice on a Cambridge 840A as i couldn't quite stretch to the £400 they went on Ebay for. I have a budget of around £250 to get an amp powerful enough to drive these little beauties. Currently on ebay i can probably get a Cambridge 740A or a NAD C352 that may go for around £200.

Out of experience or knowledge can anyone advise on which would of these would pair better with the AVI 5's? i have heard different things about NAD amps in general and wonder if their throatier sound would suit or will the more clinical sounding CA be more suited? or will my current 65watts Cambridge 640 be enough anyway meaning i don't need to ugrade?! My sources incidentally are a Cambridge 640cv2 CD player and a Pro-ject debut 2 which i both plan to upgarde sometime next year.

A confused poster awaitis

Your amp will run them just fine.

Cypher was running his through a Marantz PM6003 (2 x 45W) like mine and read how thrilled he was with the combo! I was waiting for a pair of Neutron's to come back in stock at Bartlett's a month ago, when in the meantime I came across a steal-of-an-ex-dem deal on my Focal's otherwise I'd be running the Neutron's. I saw them on ebay myself, and if I'd have had the £250 at the time I would have grabbed them as well.

EDIT - I mean your amp will run them just fine. I can't comment how they'll sound together but you'll soon find out!

Thx for the info! may stick with CA either as is with the 640 or step up to the 740.. Having read lots of negatives about the NAD i am getting a bit put off!

If you don't mind older kit, the AVI S2000MI integrated amp can be had for £200 to £300. Very good kit, especially so for the used prices. The only caveat is that if it dies there's a greater chance that it can't be repaired compared to newer kit.

Getting a sudden rush of blood to the head here and am on the verge of pressing the button and bidding for a NAD C352 for about £150 on ebay!!! - am i doing the right thing? or shall i resist and hold out for a CA 740??? it's all about what will sound better for the AVI 5's... There is also an Arcam CD72 for about £110 is this gonna sound better than the CA640v2??

Decisions....

Wish this site had a sales section cos I got a pre and power pumping out 120w with a similar name to what you are about to bid on... hmmmmmm
