The short answer is no. iPods do not have a digital ouput without adding a particular type of dock, of which there are only two - one at 350 quid and one at (off the top of my head) about 150.

If the music is on the iPod it also on your computer, and it is easy to get a digital output from the computer some way or another.

What's more, and interface and storage capacity should be better too.

For example, Apple Remote App and Airport Express.

Well it depends on what you want to achieve - you may find it a bit more versatile to feed the contents of your PC to a DAC instead of the iPod, since on the whole they *do* have digital outs (which is what you need to feed a DAC), or you can get USB DACs which just plug in a USB socket of your PC, and from there you can plug into your stereo.

Couple of quesitons first - what's your current setup, amp and speakers wise, and what's your computer setup - ie laptop, desktop, old, new, wireless network yes/no etc?

And lastly, is it an iPod Touch (there's a reason for asking this)?

If you lived at home with an iPod Dock for more than five minutes you'd see the short-coming in the user interface.

You cannot read your iPod screen across the room on the sofa in order to navigate through tracks. It's the big hiccup.

Using your laptop on the sofa streaming to Airport Express effectively gives you a huge remote control and limitless music.

You can rip all of your CDs to a NAS; stream internet radio; and use services like Last.FM.

Ah but an airport express (amongst other things) can stream music from your PC to your hifi. And an airport express *does* have a digital optical out, so *can* plug into a DAC.

And if you have an iPod Touch, you can control the whole shebang from that, which was why I asked if you had that particular model.

So if this is something that interests you, we can discuss the various options.

Tom is doesn't matter because you can see all of the music that is on the computer whilst you're in the living room if you use the iPod Touch Remote App.

The Airport Express streams the music wirelessly from the computer to the HiFi.

Right, shame, rules out remote control of airport express. There are hardware solutions but not as elegant.

But consider this - I am running an airport express and a DACMagic, total cost £270, and with lossless files on my Mac, it sounds better (on the whole) than my primare CD Player. So if you have a wireless network that spans the office and the house, this could be an attractive option for you....

Of course, if you have an 80gig iPod you can fill it with lossless and it plugged into a 30 quid Apple Universal Dock is still going to sound pretty good, you just won't be able to add a DAC to it.

If using Windows Media Player can music be streamed to hi-fi in the same way as Airport Express.
If yes, what equipment does this?
Many thanks

I use the Linksys Media Center extender DMA2100. This basically copies what is on your Media Center from your pc to your screen downstairs and you connect your DAC and amp to it also. I get music ripped via WMP as WMA Lossless files, movies, pictures streamed to my system in the lounge. It can also stream live tv as well. All for £150!
