can someone give me decent explanation of what a DAC is/ does please

Digital to Analogue Converter: takes datastream from digital source - eg CD player, digital radio/TV tuner, computer, etc. - and outputs it as an analogue signal conventional amplification can handle.

so for decent playback from say i tunes of the lappy i need to feed it in to a DAC and that in to the amp?

Depends on the quality of the audio output of the laptop. I'd try a direct connection from the audio/headphone output of the computer to the amplifier first, and see how you get on...
