I am thinking of upgrading my current system, I have recently bought the sonos zp90 and have ripped my music to a NAS. This is connected to a Marantz PM6010OSE amp, I also have a Marantz CD6002 + B&W685 speakers. I listen to a variety of differnt music rock, pop, dance. I tried a rDac and noticed an improvement in sound but would I be better off upgrading the amp? I was thinking of trying the Rega Dac with my current system. Has anyone any views or best upgrade? I am not really looking to upgrade speakers.

Thanks

Hi gavinism

How would your describe the performance of your existing system?

In what way did the rDAC offer an improvement?

What areas of your systems performance are you looking to improve?

All the best

My first impression would be to definately try the Rega DAC, I heard very little improvement with the rDAC and to be perfectly honest with you.....the standard analogue outputs on the ZP90 in my opinion sound more musical than the rDAC. I eventually went do the M1 DAC route after trying plenty of DACs all the way up to the Bryston BDA-1.

The 6010OSE is a great amplifier and the 685's are fantastic for the price so neither imho would require an immediate change.

Just my two pennies.

Thanks for the replies. Rick I find it hard to describe the improvement in sound but with the rdac I did not notice improvments on some tracks but then noticed in others. For example Adele 21 album I could hear no difference whilst the killers the instruments were more detailed producing a nice sound (for a better word).

Hi gavinsim

Thanks for your reply and your welcome.

At this stage i think you'll gain the biggest difference in performance by changing your amplifier. I used to sell the PM6010OSE and although it is impressive however Rega's new Brio R amplifier will easily offer a worthwhile upgrade in many areas of power and performance regardless of the types of music you listen. The Brio R will grip and energize your 685's more effectively and its greater transparency and overall tonal presentation will help the Brio R to sit just nicely between your source and speakers. The Brio R is a pocket rocket  and is also a real joy to listen to

After a change of amp then look at a DAC such as the exellent Rega DAC :) (which is a has a clear step up in performance over rDAC, btw).

All the best

Thanks for the input. I was a little unsure of the quality of the amp as I have had it for probably 9 years and thought if I got a new DAC then some improvments might be lost due to the quality of the amp. I presumed that technology had improved somewhat since I bought the amp. The rega amp does look interesting and it might be worthwhile me trying to audition one.

The subsequent time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as a lot as this one. I imply, I know it was my choice to learn, however I truly thought youd have one thing interesting to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you could repair should you werent too busy looking for attention.
