Cyrus IIIi and Power amp not balanced

Hi

Have previously posted about my apparently malfunctioning Cyrus IIIi, but having taken it into a local dealer today it works fine! (as do the speakers). Unfortunately, when I bring it home and bi-amp it with the Cyrus Power it sounds terrible again. After lots of bi-wiring and bi-amping it is apparent that the Power amp is not putting out the same volume as the IIIi, so when paired together the bass/treble is out of balance. When using the Power amp (bi-wired) to drive the speakers, the sound is fine but i have to put the volume up much higher than when using the IIIi alone. So, my question is what is the problem with the power amp, and what can i do about it?

Any help much appreciated!

Don

Which power amp?

The IIIi puts out 50 WPC into 8 ohms, your power amp should be matched to this. A power amp putting out 100 WPC, for example, would be an obvious imbalance.

Try using the more powerful of the two to drive the treble (yes, the treble), as the treble will actually use more power than the bass.

If you pop both of them into your local dealer, he'll be able to get them back to Cyrus and they should be able to adjust them so they're the same. Make a call to your dealer beforehand for them to confirm with Cyrus they will do that for you.

Sorry, but this is wrong. The issue is not whether the integrated and the power amp have the same power output, it is whether the gain of the two amps is the same or not.

Hi Again

Thanks for the replies.

The IIIi is Continuous Power - 50W/CH (both driven into 8 Ohms) 70W/CH (both driven into 4 Ohms) and the Power PowerAmp is rated as the same. They used to work together in perfect harmony and it is just since coming out of storage that they are out of balance.

When bi-amping: I put the IIIi on the treble, the treble dominates and the bass is too mild. When I use the PowerAmp on the treble, it is not strong enough to push the bass up to match the treble coming through the IIIi.

We're both right.

Gain boosts input voltage which translates into power output. Ohm's law and all that.

I'm sorry but your contention that bi-amping with a 50w intergrated and a 100w power amp would be unbalanced is misleading the OP.

I used a Meridian 551 integrated (65w) with a 557 power amp (200w) with a pair of B&W CDM1SEs for several years without suffering any problems.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies. I popped into a dealer today and they will take the units in to have them tested - they will try it out for me and let me know if it is a simple fix or whether i need a service (they cyrus fee is a little steep, but i guess that is the way).

However, having crossed the threshold we clapped eyes on more modern kit we are going to book in a session and listen to our components vs. some new stuff (the Naimuniti looks/sounds pretty impressive!). We have also found that our old Systemdek II is not working, so RP and clearaudio turntables will probably feature in our test session. So, if it is not a cheap fix we may be lulled into spending rather more money than originally planned!
