I have a Cyrus 3 amp with psx-r and Cyrus dad3q cd player with psx-r hooked up to a pair of mission 752 freedom speakers. My cd player is starting to play up a bit and here is my dilemma.Do I get the cd player repaired and live with a sound I am happy with or do I upgrade ? Here are the options as I see them.

Option 1

Change the amp for a cyrus 8vs2 with the cd 6 and trade in all my gear.

Option 2

Trade in my dad3q for the cd 8 and run with my Cyrus 3 amp with power supplies.

Option 3

Trade in my dad3q and psx-r for the cd 6 and Cyrus power amp and run my Cyrus 3 as a pre-amp with power supply.

Option 4

I don't know if I can afford it or if my speakers would be out of their depth but I could go the whole hog and trade my amp and cd player for the 8vs2 amp and the cd8 and utilise both my psx-r's.

Being that the Cyrus gear is half width I need to have either 2 pieces or 4 pieces of kit to fit properly on my rack.

What would you recommend ?

I have similar gear to what you describe in option 1.... I absolutely adore the sound! I am working on my wife to get an 8 power amp...

I have also heard the CD 8SE and I must admit, I didn't hear much difference compared with the outstanding (!) CD 6SE.

I am assuming with the CD players you are referring to the CD SE versions (as per the thread title) not the previous (non "Servo Evolution") series as there is a big difference which even I can notice! I think the CD 6SE sounds better than the previous CD 8 player...

I would go with option 4 if you have the money, or option 1 if you dont....

Just my 2 cents.

I think this all depends on what you feel is lacking in your system. Quality? Power? Control? Authority? Everything?!!

Your system is now about 15 years old, so there will be advances in various areas. To change one item, you'd need to identify where your current weak point is. But changing what you have for an 8 amp and CD, while gaining some benefits, I don't think it'll be a far enough step forward. I'f it was my system, I'd rather utilise the current equipment and build upon that.
