Just wondering why in the latest review of the Cyrus 8XPD amp the mag recommends the Cyrus 8SE as a partner? My initial thought is that the point of this amp is the built in DAC, so wouldn't the XT-SE be a more obvious choice?

To me, it seems that by buying the 8SE you spending more than the price of the XT-SE to replicate the DAC functionality of the amp, or perhaps the DAC in the amp just isn't as good as the one in the amp?

oops, sorry, I meant "the DAC in the amp insn't as good as the one in the CDP?"

I see. I had a look at the cyrus web site (should have done this before!)

"The CD 8 SE is the logical CD player to match. These two units together
represent probably the best value sound in the hi-fi world today. An
alternative system option would be to choose the CD XT SE CD transport
and order the amp with the optional Qx DAC that up-samples all digital
sources connected, for even better sound quality."

The other thing I noticed from their website is they've dropped their existing range of integrated amps (I'm so behind the times!), so basically if you want Cyrus' more powerful integrated amp you have to buy it with a DAC installed. Sign of the times I guess.
