I have a panasonic pro-logic crt t.v and was wondering if the latest LCD and Plasma t.v's up to 37 and 40" better than my surround sound pro-logic t.v. my current t.v is still good but getting older but the sound is good as it has 5 speakers (2 seperate) it is 28 inch but want a 37-40" LCD or Plasma BUT ARE THEY BETTER THAN I HAVE OR WORSE ??

Having gone from a 362 crt to flatscreen last year, I'll say that plasma is closer to crt in the image stakes. No matter what you'll find initially that sd material was better on the old crt. You'll soon get used to the new image though. My mother-in-law has our old tv and when I go around and see it I think the image is quite poor now. I can see the lines that make up the image. She has virgin tv by the way.

Two things you have to remember about the new breed of flat panels (whether Plasma or LCD):

1. They are designed to play HD. The native resolution will likely be 1920 x 1080 (Full HD), which means when playing PAL sources (like standard def UK TV and DVDs), they have to upscale the resolution from 720 x 576 to fill the screen. As you can see, this is a lot of pixels which need to be made up! As a result, the picture won't look as good. However, play HD on it, and (with the right TV), the picture will look fantastic and much better than your current TV.

2. A 40" TV is much bigger than your current TV. Considering the point above, any flaws in the picture as a result of this upscaling process will be magnified by that much.

So if your primary desire is for watching normal TV and DVDs, then don't expect to be blown away by the picture compared to your existing TV. However, as always, the best bet is to get out there and start having a look to see what you think!

With regards to the audio, your CRT will give a much better performance. In the quest for making slimmer TVs, the biggest compromise is on audio as now there's no air interspace behind the speakers. This was not the case with CRT TVs.
Bose has recently launched a 40-inch LCD with superior speakers. It's not cheap though.
You can buy a speaker system or soundbar if you're not happy with the sound of your new TV.

To answer quick - CRT belongs to the past, no point waisting time discusssing pros and cons.

Suppose best approach is to search for the best flastpannels with respect to sound - if this is a major issue. Traditionally Philips 8000 and 9000 have good sound, Panasonic used to be good at sound on their high-end models, but the recent 2-3 generations are focused on low-cost, dont expect sound to be a plus, As said, its a question of ( your own ) research in a jungle of TV sets.
