Couple of questions re AV sound

I'll be connecting my Marantz UD7006 bluray player to my Onkyo 805 amp via analogue for 5.1. Would it be obvious which of these would be the better decoder, or is a case of trying it out? Would it be possible to bitstream the audio as it would be done over HDMI?

No, if you're connecting by analogue the BDP is doing the decoding, the only way you can choose is to connect by HDMI. Does the 805 not decode HD audio via HDMI (does it even have HDMI)?

if you use the analogue then as above the player does the decoding and you will need to do a full manual set up of the speakers (i stand to be corrected). while with the HDMI connection you have the option of having either the player or the amp do the decoding. (one version has the HD symbols light up on the amp and the other does not).
