Contrast enhancer on or off?

I have a setting for contrast enhancer on my sony tv and was just wandering if It's recommended to have this setting on or off when watching high def or SD? When i use this setting & select it to say 'medium' it increases the contrast but i thought it was suppose to make blacks blacker too? Any advice would be appreciated
