I am thinking of getting a CD transport simply for convenience with an optical out. I use the PC for most of the time, but until its all wireless I cannot use it as a computer and a music source at the same time. I have got a Sony BDP370 connected optically to my DAC, which of course also plays CD,s but I am wondering if there isn't something worth hunting out second hand that would work better for not much cash. I guess I miss having a large shiny metal box with reassuring LED / neon lights blinking at me.....

Steve, my basic Sony DVD player works very well through my Caiman. A slight touch brighter than the Kandy CDP but not overly so plus I get quality sounds from my DVDs

Bad words to use on a HiFi forum but I think money spent on expensive CD players goes into the DAC and processing, the transport not so much.

Thanks Davie - I did a quick AB of ACDC Live DVD and the ripped CD both s/pdif into the DAC and the so was was pretty close ish. The Sony can only output max 48K 16 bit on that disc (or 2 ch 44.1K) so there was never going to be a huge potential advantge anyway.

Both were much more noticeably better than the sony analogue out.
