I have a Marrantx SR4200 Receiver and DV4100 DVD player and five speakers connected.

Recently, the quality and volume of the centre channel has deteriorated such that voice on DVDs is quiet and kind of muffled.

I have played with the channel volumes to bring the centre up and others down, that makes the voice audible but still very poor quality. I have swapped the centre speaker for another one but that has had no affect.

Thoughts ?...

Assuming all is well with the receiver and speakers, make sure the receiver doesn't have a 'night mode' engaged, or that the surround setting isn't on a music one - as an example, ProLogic II Music will make the centre seem a little lacklustre.

Further - I have the DVD connected digitally and the received auto setting the surround. So it goes to Dolby or whatever. Strange thing is that on dolby digital the centre channel is completely silent. If I force dolby digital pr logic the centre channel is on but muffled...
