Can I use a 5.1 system as a 2.1 or 3.1 system?

I am looking at purchasing an all-in-one receiver and speaker package. However, I only want to use the rear speakers occasionally as I don't want them to be a permanent fixture in my living room. Therefore can I use the system as a 2.1 or 3.1 for everyday use and then set up the rear speakers for 5.1 occasionally for movies etc.

I think you'll be fine if you set the system up with the 5.1 in place. then just disconnect the rears when not required. You won't be losing anything very much for day-to-day listening - just make sure you keep the 'empty' ends of the speaker cables from touching when the speakers aren't there, as this would cause the receiver's protection circuitry to kick in.

Thanks All.

Anyone recommend a good all-in-one 5.1 system. I already have a Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray player. Need something for Blu-ray, Sky HD and Xbox360.
