I bought this tv at christmas time and must say it is a fantastic tv, the picture is great and for the money i paid im really really happy with it. This week it seems to have developed a buzzing noise which is coming from behind the set. It does this on HD and SD tv. Is this normal for plasma's as this is the first i have had???

Andy,

Sounds to me like the normal ammount of buzzing you should expect from a plasma. My 42G20 buzzes but it never seems overly loud and doesn't intrude during Bluray or dvd movies which for me is the big test! As a rule if you are hearing extreme buzzing during a movie to the point where it's spoiling your enjoyment then you may have an issue, buzzing is to be expected but if it's at that level then i would say the tv might have an issue. Also viewing distance is very important as the nearer you sit to the tv the louder it will seem plus differing levels of contrast and brightness will effect the ammount of buzzing that you hear

It is a known issue with some panasonic plasma's. I have returned two tx42g20b tv's, the buzzing was quite irritating. I have owned a previous panasonic plasma and that didn't buzz at all so imo it is a defect. The guy at Richer sounds also confirmed to me that they have problems with this particular model. I would contact the shop as it possibly a fault.

Cheers Oldboy, it seems to be on really bright whites that take up a large part of the screen. Say if it goes into the sky filled with clouds (poor example and a little camp) then it occurs and be quite irritating. I realise plasma's buzz slightly all the time but with it being a month old i thought it might still be settling in. I'll give it a few weeks and see if it settles. If not its going back and getting fixed. Im nearly 3metres away so its not viewing distance the tv's perfect for my living room, well was until i noticed this bloody buzzing ha

Andy,

If it's annoying you then you may be better off returning it? It may calm down a little but i wouldn't expect it to suddenly go quiet over night, i know exactly what you mean about bright scenes as my Panny does it slightly with SD signals but with HD it's quiet as a mouse (my panny is optimised for HD).

Stick with it and see if it calms down and you can live with it for a week before you decide what to do next, you have to remember that repairs can be a lengthy process and you could face upwards of a month without your tv. Depending on the retailer a straight exchange for another new PK350 may be available or even a refund but most retailers will attempt a repair first and are within their rights to do so.

May be worth returning it

There's quite a lot about this problem mentioned on a US AV Forum about their version of the PK350 (PK550). To a degree it's normal on Plasma's when a bright white image is on screen as the PSU ramps up power, however it seems people suffer it in varying degrees (environmental factors such as ambient room noise/mains supply noise, screen position etc will also determine the extent to which it is noticed).

It may well be that tightening a few surface screws on the back of the set (taking care when doing so and definitely NOT removing the rear cover for safety reasons) will fix it, as many on that forum have found. Do a search for "LG PK550 buzzing" and it should lead you in the right direction.

Mine buzzes a little and I can hear it from my seating position if the image is bright white - but only really if the volume is turned down low and I'm listening for it, like I said it's not uncommon and I wouldn't worry if you only hear it when you put your ear round the back of the set! Many screens from many manufacturers do this as a quick Google search will find! It's only a problem if it bothers you really, there is nothing about to go wrong with the set.

cheers AE jim thats a big help, i actually read some of your older posts on this set and because of them and max's advice i went for the set. I love it, best set i have ever had and for a great great price. But like you say the buzzing is only there if you want to hear it. Its not a major issue just a little concern i had. Thanks for the advice
