All,

I currently have an Acoustic Energy Aego P5 setup from a few years ago which I am looking to replace. Its important to say that films are not my main enjoyment, and I would never spend the time/money/effort on researching and buying home cinema compared with my beloved two channel stereo!

However, I probably watch a film once a week and also sometimes use the surround sound for xbox.

I want to spend as little as possible for a decent result, and have been thinking about the Sony STRDH800 as its currently reasonably priced on richersounds.com (£259) with maybe the Jamo surround package which you can find for around £230.

This is still a £500 outlay, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for maybe cheaper options? Yes I know people will say I need to audition, but unlike my Stereo, I am not too concerned with the Surround amp, as long as I get surround sound and decent rumble from the sub then all good!

My only real requirements are:

Audio through HDMI so I dont need to have extra cables.

Small sub and satellite speakers, rather than a large speaker package.

Thoughts?!

No takers?

I realise I may have rambled a bit! Key point is, I want a new surround sound system to replace my AE Aego P5. I want to spend as little as possible and I have seen the Sony STRDH800 and Jamo speaker package for around £500 all in. Just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions.

My only requirement:

Audio is done through HDMI

Small sub and sat rather than large speaker package.

I think that's one of the cheapest separate systems you'll find which is HD audio capable.

However, for an all-in-one unit, there's this Onkyo package combined with the extra speakers. I haven't heard it personally but a couple of people on the forums have rated it and it's a bit cheaper at £400.

Ah thats interesting. I have to admit I had discounted that one as I thought it was only 2.1 enabled. Reasonably priced too.

Im in the same boat as you depending on your budget i have just asked the question whether the yamaha is the best option with it only being £100ish more than the sony

Have a look at this the yamaha:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yamaha-RXV765BL-7-1-AV-Receiver/dp/B002BSGMYM/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1259679347&sr=1-10

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-STRDH800-CEK-Receiver-1080-Cinema/dp/B002COJ58A/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1259679386&sr=1-3 Without upconversion

Yes I saw youre other thread. The Yamaha looks good, but I am really looking for as cheap as possible. I am not a massive film person (and spend a lot more time and effort on my 2 ch setup) but I probably watch about 1 a week, plus xbox etc. The onkyo all in one system looks good, but I am also thinking that I'll keep this system for quite a long time, so maybe the SONY is the better option.

Sony is a bit more flexible in that it allows upgrade of just amp or just speakers at a later date and also has more inputs, 7.1 etc.

Yep spotted that, looks like Sony etc is the way to go.
