I did a comparison between the original Sounddock and the Zeppelin in John Lewis, where they had them on display next to each other. (The Zeppelin was better). Are you anywhere near a John Lewis? The other place that sells both Bose and B&W are Apple shops, are you anywhere near an Apple shop?

If you want great sound then neither!!!!

The Bose (as with all their stuff) is a box filled with very cheap components, cobbled together with no real thought into tuning the enclosure (hence the big bass, not much detail result).

And the Zeppelin is nothing more than a small amp paired with a pair of MT-1s, that have been laughingingly tuned with twin bass ports to produce some ***** upper bass to accompany the steely tweeters.

Why is it that this stuff gets innovation/sound accolades, when it is nothing more than the typical £200 CD/CASS/RADIO unit you'd have bought back in 1990, but with CD, cassette and radio ripped out and an ipod dock stuck on with a 100 more notes added to the price tag!!!!?

If you want to get the best out of your mordern day walkman (the ipod ain't proper hifi) get a half decent ipod dock (onkyo dsa3x), decent amp (maybe a Rotel RA04), and some proper hifi speakers (like Focal, Rega, etc) - and not the chinese tat mascarading under the original names (Denon, Marantz, Cambridge Audio, Wharfedale, Quad, Mission, Cyrus, ugh the list goes on)

And for god sake rip the CDs using a secure ripping program (EAC, DB Poweramp), into WAV or Apple Lossless, rather than relying on Itunes/media player

Not really sure about the above comments - the Zeppelin is great for what it does and a lot better than the Bose - also has the following drive units 1x 125mm (5 in) bass 2x 90mm (3.5 in) midrange 2x 25mm (1 in) metal dome tweeter - which is unfair to compare to M-1s and this unit does def pack a punch for an ipod dock you will be very surprised.

I would also say look at the fatman carbon 2 and buy yourself a decent pair of speakers to go with it - allowing the speakers to be placed further apart improving soundstage although doesn't look as classy as the zep.

If you are happy to buy seprates you will get a better sound but takes up far more space and also need to allow for cables ect

you would also find it really hard to find products that arn't chinese made or using chinese parts these days

There are a whole host of reasons to get a product like the Sounddock, I have one for its price (the original) and space. Lets give advice to the OP rather than criticise his choices.

With regards to the original question, Bose make lifestyle systems and speakers for commercial properties and are often slated by audiophiles. They have a typically 'American sound' of a big bass and strong dynamics. I find the bass to be deep but well controlled. The Sounddock is the only system that does not distort the opening bass line of Massive Attack's track 'Angel' that I have heard. It also digs out plenty of detail. It suffers most from a lack of soundstage and stereo, as it is all sound from a small enclosure. But that is also true, to a lesser extent for the Zeppelin and all ipod docking systems without spearate speakers.

As for a box filled with cheap components, you would be surprised what many expensive amps/CDPs etc have inside them. It is not the case that Bose use only cheap stuff and all other makers use expensive stuff by any means.

I think he is just showing off

I still want to know what he meant by a 'mordern day walkman' - is that one of the brands you saw at the Hong Kong show, Andrew?

Going back to the OP - having spent some time with the Zeppelin Mini, I'd definitely check this out for a small/medium sized room, as well as its bigger brother for larger spaces.

Legendary's comments are a little dubious to say the least.......

I'm a discerning audiophile, and I'm no Bose fan, and I've not yet heard the Sound Dock 10, but their other docks don't actually sound that bad for the money. Given that they're usually demonstrated with compressed music, they sound quite open and detailed, with a surprisingly satisfying bass, especially given their compact size. Midrange isn't really a problem either - it does take a lot more than just 'cobbling together' some bits together to achieve what they have. And given the amount we sell (at one point we used to outsell Bose themselves), we get very few back, which is an atonishingly low returns rate, which makes them an extremely reliable product.

I'll wager that the Bose docks are easily the most popular 'specialist' docks out there - and before anyone claims this is down to their marketing, people who come into our store and purchase one, do s AFTER having a demonstration of one. One or two will buy the Zeppelin, but those that don't either preferred the sound of the Bose, or needed something smaller, either due to space or due to the fact that they take it with them on holiday or on business trips.

When people buy their products based on demos, you can't argue with that.

I can't comment on the Bose Sound Dock 10, but I can compare the Sound Dock 3 and the Zeppelin. I have the zeppelin and my girlfriend has the Bose.

I bought the Zeppelin just 1 month ago and can't remember myself ever listening to this much music. It's just fabulous. The sound is detailed, the base is solid but precise and it fills a large room with ease. Not to mention that it's probably one of the sexiest electronic objects I've ever seen. I have it set up in my study with a glass desk and my MacBook air on the table. It feels like you're walking into a room designed 30 years from now.

I don't listen to the Bose that often, but when I do it does deliver quite respectable music, not up to the Zeppelin's standards but definately a close match when looking at it from a pound per pound perspective. I know the sound Dock 10 is supposed to be the real match for the Zeppelin, falling closer in its price range, but I haven't seen it anywhere yet.

I have no doubt you will be satisfied with either of them. However for me the Zeppelin just steals it. Of course if you are seriously considering the Bose go demo them side by side, it's the only way of truly knowing.
