I'm planning on getting a pair of Bookshelf speakers for my bedroom. Something that's suitable, or in other words to synergize well with my Net Audio MK3 upgraded Quad 405-2 amp. Plus, space is limited in my bedroom. So a speaker of near field/Back wall placement nature is what my room needs. At the moment I have no clue on budget? But for now your suggestions will be very helpful. Thank you. Rest of my system, Townshend Rock II turntable/Rega R200. Tag Mclaren PA10 preamp. Quad 405-2 poweramp (With full MK3 upgrade) Rotel RCD-1070 CD player.

Hi Linn is the best

You could consider some ATC models such as the SCM7's or SCM11's. They are closed box designs and more importantly are flat and honest in their presentation which will help with placement close to a wall without the bass in particular getting itself into a twist.

Thanks

Shane, the Spendor SA1s work very well with that Quad, giving a smooth and detailed presentation. Also try the Harbeth P3ESR is your want something of a similar size. If the budget is less then consider the AVI Neutrons; these will gel well with the smooth nature of the 405.

I'm sure we've been here before...

Oh my god, you remember me 🙂

I keep forgetting about the Spendor and Harbeth speakers (What's wrong with me)

Yes the AVI, I've read in some places some people are happily using the Neutrons with Quad amplification.

It's always fun to talk about these things. Have you had the chance to try the 405MK3 on many speakers? I've only used it on the SA1s and it does a good job but I'd love to try it with something bigger, perhaps some ATC SCM19 or even Spendor SP100 :-D

The only other speaker I have tried with my MK3 405 was some Lowther speakers. A big massive miss match and mistake that was, so I just ended up selling the Lowthers and putting back my trusty TDL speakers with the Quad, end of story.

Is the Quad 405 more of a good 'voltage 'amp rather than good current? I remember reading somewhere that ATC speakers go well with amps that have good voltage etc. I think it was a member from Pinkfish media who said that?

Well, that's a question I've wondered about myself. The 405MK3 with DMPSU can peak to about 20A, the 909 can manage 22A. I don't know what others figures would be needed to qualify these measurements and they may be completely meaningless by themselves. When you consider that the Musical Fidelity A5 can peak 70A (peak to peak) and the Primare I30 40A, I'd suggest that the amp has a middle of the road amount of current on offer. I'm sure there's a lot more to the story than just these figures when it comes to current and speaker grip but my gut feeling is that the Quad current dumpers aren't the amps to buy if you need to drive nasty impedance loads. I think the Quads provide a high quality sound and plenty of volts to get insensitive speakers moving with ease. Rather a good match for a pair of high-end mini monitors!

Now, the Netaudio mono pair might well be another story. Hopefully I'll be able to report back before the year is out
