Well just watched the penultimate episode of series 3 and the scene is set for an awesome final episode next week.

I'll not give anything away but suffice to say that next week can't come quick enough.

Some series run out of steam but in my opinion this show gets better and better.

John Harrow, best character on TV at the moment (not that I watch much TBH). Mesmerising.

i find it fascinating as although fictional, based on real characters that existed. Watching series 1 on demand at the moment. Love it

Great series - we get the blu-rays through Lovefilm. Definitely one for the projector as every scene is so great from a visual point of view.

Can't wait for series 3 to get released on BD.

Worth checking out the band behind the theme tune - Brian Jonestown Massacre. Great Stuff!

I have series 1.

Still not sure whether to go for the second series or not.

The Wire* and The Sopranos* surpass it so far (although I can't comment on Boardwalk series 2 yet).

Series 1 of Boardwalk Empire didn't pass the "must watch the whole thing again, right now" test that The Sopranos, West Wing and The Wire all passed with flying colours.

*I am still waiting for the Blu-ray box-sets to replace my DVD box-sets of both.

I've never watched The Sopranos, although I do intend to sometime. However, I have watched The Wire and in my opinion The Wire is the best TV series I've ever watched. If I only watched programmes that matched up with The Wire then I might as well get rid of my TV, its hard to think of a series bettering it.

Anyway irrespective of the greatness of The Sopranos and The Wire, I feel that Boardwalk Empire stands up well in its own right. Great acting, superlatively filmed, and with a great script that manages to merge fact and fiction seamlessly. There are some quite forceful debates over on the IMDB website over whether series 2 and 3 live up to the high standards of series 1, but IMO they do. As I say series 3 ends this coming weekend and it promises to be a real thrill a minute episode.

As a side note there is a great story told by the brilliant Stephen Graham of how he got the role of Al Capone. When asked to audition for the role he sent in a video of himself talking in his best Brooklyn accent and using his young child's toy golf club as his machine gun! The producers were obviously impressed.

From what I've read you shouldn't hold your breath for a blu ray of the wire.

Boardwalk: thought seasons 1 and 2 were good, season 3 leaves me non-plussed.

The Wire: highest entry point of any series I've watched. Really struggled with the first 3 episodes, but once you hit that high water mark, was addicted. "Sheeeeeeeett"

Sopranos / West Wing: watched early seasons, but lost interest. Could put Dexter into this category as well.

Californication / Mad Men: brilliant. Addicted, especially to the writing.

Otherwise, have been on a steady diet of foreign DVDs - The Killing, Spirals, Braquo to name a few.

Mad Men is truly superb - and another great blu-ray watch on projector - the scenes and colouring are amazing. The plot is still going strong as I wait for series 5 disc 2 from Lovefilm to arrive.
