Hi,

I've just ordered myself a Panasonic BD30 to go with my Sony KDL-40V2000 (that dinosaur from 2006) based on the reviews I've found on instead of plumping for the Sony PS3...now not even 24 hours have passed since I hit the "submit payment" button and already I'm worried I may have jumped in to bluray too soon (even though I've been waiting for years!)

The main reason for this sudden rush of doubt is the imminent release of Profile 2.0 but at the same time all I can find out about it is that it will let me view trailers and download important things like ringtones (!?!?!)...if only I had some other sort of device that could connect to the internet to do this...oh wait, I'm using it now.

Can someone please try and put my mind at ease and tell me Profile 2.0 is for the real film buffs amongst us or let me know if I should give Pixmania a call in the morning and ask them to ship me a PS3?

Thanks in advance.

Profile 2.0 basically gives you the added BD-LIve functionality on Blu-ray discs, which requires an internet connection. This could be used for interactive features such as downloading film trailers and commentaries, or to buy merchandise from the film studios online.

The other difference with Blu-ray 2.0 is that the mandatory local storage capacity on the player is increased to 1GB, so there's room to store that extra content. Either way, I wouldn't worry about it too much as it's more a film studio gimmick than an essential feature.

At last! Some sense about Profile 2.0!! Thanks Andy...
I couldn't agree more. 2.0 is more about Studio control and gimmickry than core functionality. The last thing I'll ever do is connect my player to the net.
What we want is to watch our movies in the best resolution possible. That's all. Extras are fine, but that's all they are. Extras. And as for games.... don't get me started!!

I agree. If you want games over the internet buy a Sony Wee or a Nintendo Playstation.
