I currently own a ps3 for spinning my bluray films and i'm pretty much happy with the picture it gives me but i also want the hd audio. So can anyone recommend a player that will give me the hd audio and keep the picture quality or indeed improve it, for a simular price tag to the ps3. Thanks

The PS3 gives you all of the HD audio abilities you require.

Each of the HD formats is decoded onboard and can be output via HDMI as a Linear PCM feed.

All you need is an AV receiver that can receive this feed via HDMI and you're sorted.

If you haven't updated your PS3 recently do so because, AFAIA, it then includes all the new HD audio options.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot what does AFAIA mean? I've noticed you Guys using other "secret" codes too. Obviously I'm aware of GSOH, FYI and the like (don't ask why!) an explanation would make my daily trawl through this forum much more enjoyable if I could stop spending the rest of my day trying to work out what these mean!
Cheers.

AFAIA = As far as I'm aware.
AFAIK = As far as I know. I hope that helps

You need version 2.30 (or above - 2.35 is the latest available) to get the HD formats. I think it was only released mid-April so you probably haven't got it as yet. The key thing is, your amp must be able to accept Linear PCM via an HDMI socket. Because the sounds are decoded onboard, the amp itself won't actually display that it's outputting Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio, it will display something along the lines of Multichannel PCM. Rest assured you are getting the proper hi-def sound though.

I'm awaiting delivery of a PS3 (get a move-on SuperFi!). My AV amp/receiver is a Denon 1507 (ie non-HDMI). I assume the best - only? - PS3/1507 connection for sound is via optical digital? Anyone know if the 1507 is able to produce pukka HD sound? Ta.

Your Denon does have 7.1 analogue inputs, so with a Blu-Ray player with analogue outputs and onboard decoding (e.g. Sony BDP-500 or new Panasonic DMP-BD50 when this is released), you could get HD Audio from these. For the PS3 though, digital optical is your best bet I'm afraid (still pretty good - I'm still using this until I can afford my new surround amp!).

Same boat as You Prof but personally I am more tempted to get a BD player with Mulit-Channel outs rather than change my Yamaha Amp as I love how it sounds with My KEF's. If only I could find a BD player with analog outs and that is a TRUE Multi-Region machine for both BD and DVD, fingers crossed for the upcoming Denon units.

Oh and thanks for excepting my Friends request on XBOX Live

Yup, I do love my current Denon, but looking to get something which does all the HDMI switching too as my long term plans involve a projector. The new Onkyo 876 look tempting and of course we should hopefully have the new Denon's and Yamaha's to contend with by the time I have the money. Looking forward to some auditioning!

No worries, though I've been so caught up in trying to complete GTA, haven't been online in ages! I did just receive COD 4 from Lovefilm though, so may well stack up some online time with this over the next few weeks!
